Impact Work-Hardening Material

Manganese steel performance depends on impact and work hardening

Under severe impact, compression and repeated plastic deformation, the working surface of austenitic manganese steel can progressively harden while the core retains toughness. In low-stress sliding wear with insufficient impact or plastic deformation, work hardening may be limited and manganese steel may not be economical.

03 · FEED / IMPACT

Required Properties
Absorb repeated large-lump impacts and resist wear, with crack resistance around holes, corners and section transitions.

For low-impact chute sidewalls and purely sliding wear, also compare quenched and tempered wear plate, ceramic and polymer liners.

Manufacturing and Quality Control

ASTM A128/A128M covers austenitic manganese steel castings and alloyed variants, requiring suitable heat treatment for toughness and ductility. Composition and acceptance requirements follow the purchase drawings or technical agreement.

Material and Heat Identification

Check the engineering grade, heat chemistry, alloy additions and traceability; the name manganese steel does not replace a material specification.

Solution Treatment and Cooling

Match heat treatment to maximum section thickness and furnace loading. Record heating, soaking, transfer and cooling to avoid residual brittle microstructures.

Defects and Repairs

Select visual, dimensional and PT inspection according to part risk. MT is not suitable for austenitic manganese steel; UT requires a validated procedure. Reinspect weld repairs to the same quality requirements.

Installation and Service Life

Check mounting faces, hole spacing, weight, matching chamber geometry and initial clearances. Record wear profiles as well as total tonnage processed.

Use the equipment and part links to check confirmed OEM drawing numbers, part numbers, applicable models and inquiry requirements.

Other Material Applications: Gears, pinions, girth gears, main shafts, bushings, sprockets and bearing housings carry loads or transmit power. Select their materials separately for fatigue, strength, surface hardening and fits; manganese wear part specifications do not automatically apply.
