High-chromium White Iron Wear Parts

Hard carbides resist abrasive cutting and slurry erosion in pump wet ends, low- to moderate-impact liners, coal mill and grinding parts, and media. Assess locations exposed to large-lump impact, bending or tramp metal carefully.

Carbide-reinforced Wear-resistant Cast Iron

Balance Abrasion Resistance Against Brittle Fracture and Impact

High-chromium white iron combines carbides with a controlled matrix for abrasion and erosion resistance. Carbide morphology and volume, matrix structure, section size and heat treatment determine performance. "Cr26" or "high chromium" alone cannot predict equal life in different parts.

Related Parts

The parts below use high-chromium white iron for wear resistance. Shafts, gears and load-bearing housings require separate structural material specifications.

01 · SLURRY PUMP

Slurry Pump Wet-end Wear Parts

Part
Impellers, volute liners, front and rear liners, throatbushes and suction liners.
Required Properties
Resist slurry erosion and abrasive cutting while retaining the hydraulic profile; localized cavitation also requires assessment.

Compare metal and rubber wet ends using particle characteristics, flow, head, speed, slurry concentration, pH and chlorides.

02 · LINER / CHUTE

Chute, Hopper and Material Guide Liners

Part
Cast liners in low- to moderate-impact zones, chute side liners, elbow and guide wear blocks, and HPGR edge protection.
Required Properties
Resist sliding wear and directional erosion, using segmentation, supports and fasteners to control stress in the brittle material.

Do not apply directly to head-on drop impact zones. Assess drop height, impact angle, backing support and hole-edge stresses.

03 · GRINDING

Grinding Wear Parts and Media

Part
Coal mill rolls and rings, selected table liners, grinding balls and mill-end or chute wear parts under controlled impact.
Required Properties
Maintain hardness and microstructural stability under severe abrasion while controlling spalling and abnormal fracture.

High-impact SAG/AG shell liners should not be changed to high-chromium white iron solely to increase abrasion resistance.

Manufacturing and Quality Control

ASTM A532/A532M covers abrasion-resistant white cast iron for mining, milling and material handling, including chemistry, heat treatment condition and hardness. Add part-specific microstructure, defect and dimensional requirements to the delivery specification.

Chemistry and Grade

Confirm the ASTM class/type or other grade from the drawing or technical agreement. Check Cr/C ratio, Mo/Ni/Cu alloying and heat traceability.

Microstructure and Heat Treatment

Control carbide morphology, matrix structure, retained austenite and thick-section cooling. Record the heat treatment condition in addition to surface hardness.

Defects and Integrity

Focus on blade roots, hole edges, corners and section transitions. Select visual, dimensional, MT/PT/UT or leak checks according to risks and applicability.

Assembly and Hydraulic Dimensions

Check impeller, volute liner, throatbush and clearances on pump parts. Check liner backing contact, fasteners and joints to prevent assembly-stress cracking.

Use part pages for OEM drawing references, part numbers, models and dimensions. Material options require assessment against operating conditions.

Alternative Materials: Compare wear-resistant or tough alloy steel for coarse sharp particles and stronger impact, rubber or polyurethane for fine particles, corrosion or noise reduction, and ceramic or composite liners for severe sliding wear with adequate support. Material performance depends on the application.
