Identify rotary roller-cone, DTH or COPROD drilling before checking models and assemblies

Epiroc's current surface drilling range includes Drill Master, Pit Viper and SmartROC. Hole diameters, drilling methods, masts, drill strings, rotary heads, feeds and compressed air configurations vary significantly across these families. This page supports wear part and core spare identification; the same hole diameter or brand does not establish interchangeability.

01

Rotary Roller-Cone Bits

Rotary Tricone Drill Bits

Installed at the bottom of the rotary drill string, the bit directly breaks rock. Check hole diameter, IADC cutting structure, steel teeth or carbide inserts, open or sealed bearings, circulation method, thread and rock strength. The drill model alone is insufficient for bit selection.

Material Selection:Evaluate cutting elements and inserts within tungsten carbide systems. Confirm cones, legs and the threaded body against high-strength, tough alloy steel, surface strengthening, bearing and sealing requirements.

02

Bit Shirttail, Bearing and Nozzle Wear Areas

Shirttail, Bearing & Nozzle Wear Zones

Shirttails, cone noses, nozzles and bearing areas are exposed to abrasive cuttings, rotational wear, impact and wet conditions. Used-bit failure analysis should distinguish cutting element wear, shirttail wear, bearing failure, nozzle blockage and thread damage.

Material Selection:Localized wear protection, carbide protection and the body alloy steel must be designed together. Increasing surface hardness alone may increase cracking risk in the bit legs, threads or bearing areas.

Shock Absorbers, Saver Subs, Drill Pipes and Stabilizers

Shock Absorber, Saver Sub, Drill Pipe & Stabilizer

Pit Viper and DM rotary drill strings commonly include shock absorbers, saver subs, drill pipes, bit subs or roller stabilizers, with deck bushings centring the string. Images locate mast and string areas; confirm individual parts against the full model, mast, pipe outside diameter, thread and assembly drawing.

Material Selection:Drill pipes and connections must meet stiffness, bending toughness, fatigue strength, thread strength and outer-wall wear requirements together. Confirm dedicated drilling tool alloy steels and heat treatment accordingly.

04

COPROD Tools and Couplings

COPROD Drill String & Couplings

SmartROC CL uses COPROD. Rods, tubes, couplings, bits and the percussion unit form a complete system, with wear concentrated at threads, splines, guides and cuttings return areas. Do not describe these as conventional rotary drill strings or DTH tools.

Material Selection:Confirm tool bodies and connectors against high-strength, tough, fatigue-resistant alloy steel requirements. Surface strengthening, core toughness, straightness and thread geometry jointly affect service life.

DTH Hammers, Bits and Splined Connections

DTH Hammer, Bit & Spline Components

SmartROC D60 and selected DM and Pit Viper models configured for DTH use down-the-hole hammers and matching bits. Confirm hammer dimensions, bit diameter, splines, retaining rings, check valves and air supply parameters. The image locates the D60 DTH tooling system.

Material Selection:Confirm bit inserts within carbide systems, and hammer bodies, splines, pistons and connections against fatigue-resistant alloy steel, surface strengthening and dimensional fit requirements.

Deck Bushings, Guide Blocks, Dust Hoods and Track قطع الغيار المستهلكة

Deck Bushings, Guides, Dust Hood & Track قطع الغيار المستهلكة

Deck bushings and guide blocks control drill string position; dust hoods, skirts and extraction passages face abrasive rock dust; track shoes, rollers and guides face ground wear. These three groups occupy different positions, so submit separate close-up photos and dimensions.

Material Selection:Assess deck bushings within bearing or wear-resistant alloy systems; dust skirts and seals within wear-resistant elastomers; track and guide wear parts within high-strength, tough alloy steel or quenched and tempered wear plate systems.

Rotary Heads, Main Shafts, Gearboxes and Chucks

Rotary Head, Spindle, علبة التروس & Chuck

The rotary head transfers drive torque and axial load to the drill string. It includes electric or hydraulic drives, gearbox, main shaft, bearings, seals, chuck and connecting flanges. Check the machine model, rotary head model, assembly number, speed, torque and interface dimensions as a system.

Material Selection:Check gears, main shafts and splines for transmission alloy steel, tooth surface strengthening and fatigue strength. Confirm housings, bearings and seals separately against original drawing materials, tolerances and lubrication requirements.

Feed, Hoist, Wire Rope/Chain and Sheave Systems

Feed/Pulldown Drive, Cable/Chain & Sheaves

Feed and hoist systems move the rotary head or tools along the mast, using cylinders, chains or wire ropes depending on the design. Check mast version, feed length, sheave reeving ratio, tensioning structure, chain links or rope diameter, end connections and installation position.

Material Selection:Check sprockets, sheaves, pins and connectors for high-strength, tough alloy steel and contact fatigue resistance. Confirm wire ropes, chains and end connections against loads, safety factors and inspection requirements.

Masts, Pivot Pins, Bushings and Levelling Jacks

Mast, Pivot Pins, Bushings & Levelling Jacks

Mast and levelling structures determine drilling position and stability. Pins, bushings, hinge lugs, cylinder trunnions and jacks withstand alternating bending, impact and sliding wear. Repairs require checks of geometric datums, concentricity, welding and non-destructive testing requirements.

Material Selection:Check pins for high-strength, tough alloy steel and surface strengthening. Select bearing steel, copper alloy or composite bushings according to the original design. Ordinary wear-resistant steel cannot directly replace load-bearing structural components.

Drawing and spare part numbers

Identify the catalogue number, then confirm its model, tooling and position

The available local Epiroc records contain no spare part numbers ready for publication with verified links to specific drill models. This page therefore lists no placeholder numbers. Submit an Epiroc OEM number, third-party number, assembly number, catalogue page or used-part marking for identification.

Numbering rules:Only numbers traceable to OEM catalogues, drawings, nameplates or reliable third-party cross-references are published. Bit catalogue numbers also require confirmation of diameter, thread, IADC, bearing and circulation method; the drill model alone is insufficient.

Are DM, Pit Viper and SmartROC tools interchangeable if the hole diameter is the same?

No. Also check rotary, DTH or COPROD method, pipe outside diameter and thread, rotary head, mast, feed, compressed air, bit structure and specific assembly drawings.

What is the minimum information for a surface drill spare parts enquiry?

Provide the full model, serial number, drilling method, hole diameter, mast and rod configuration, assembly or OEM/third-party number, installation position, used-part photos, critical dimensions and material or hardness information.

Can drill parts be identified without an Epiroc OEM number?

Start with the nameplate, catalogue pages, installation position, used-part markings, photos and critical dimensions. These support assessment of catalogue lookup or reverse measurement. Part numbers and interchangeability are not invented on public pages without reliable evidence.
