Alloys for High-temperature, Corrosive and Special Media

Select materials for high-temperature oxidation, thermal cycling, creep, acid, alkali or chloride corrosion, and combined corrosion and wear. Applications include clinker cooler grates, kiln hot-end parts, corrosion-resistant pump wet ends and nozzles. Specify the exact grade, beyond "stainless steel" or "heat-resistant steel".

Material Selection by Temperature and Medium

Start with the Service Environment

For heat-resistant alloys, assess oxidation, carburization, sulfidation, creep, thermal fatigue and hot strength. For corrosion-resistant alloys, assess pH, chlorides, temperature, crevices, flow velocity and stress corrosion. Particle wear adds a need to balance corrosion resistance, hardness, toughness and manufacturability.

Related Parts

01 · HOT END

Clinker Cooler and Kiln Hot-end Parts

Part
Cooler grate plates and bars, side plates, sealing strips, hot-end flow guides and guards, furnace supports and high-temperature nozzles.
Required Properties
Resist hot oxidation, thermal fatigue, distortion and abrasion while maintaining microstructural stability through thermal cycles.

Continuous and peak temperatures, thermal cycling, atmosphere and mechanical loads determine the heat-resistant alloy system.

02 · CORROSIVE SLURRY

Corrosive Slurry Pump and Fluid-handling Parts

Part
Pump impellers, casings and liners, front and rear liners, shaft sleeves, valve bodies and wetted parts for special media.
Required Properties
Resist pitting, crevice corrosion, erosion-corrosion and stress corrosion while retaining hydraulic dimensions and mechanical strength.

Material selection requires more than pH. Provide chloride content, temperature, solids, oxidizing or reducing conditions, and flow velocity.

03 · SPECIAL PROCESS

Nozzles, Screens and Special Process Parts

Part
Nozzles for hot or corrosive service, screens, filter elements, reactor internals, agitator parts and corrosion-resistant fasteners and supports.
Required Properties
Maintain strength, corrosion resistance and dimensional stability in the specified medium and temperature, while meeting welding, casting or machining requirements.

Pressure-boundary and safety-critical parts must also meet the applicable product code, material standard and nondestructive testing requirements.

Manufacturing and Quality Control

Special alloys require careful control of chemistry balance, heat treatment, welding heat input and microstructure. Passing spectrometric composition checks does not establish corrosion or heat resistance.

Material Standards and Heat Identification

Specify the exact grade and applicable ASTM, EN, GB, GOST or other drawing standard. Check heat chemistry, material identification and traceability.

Heat Treatment and Microstructure

For heat-resistant cast steel, assess microstructural stability and hot cracking. For duplex steel, assess phase balance and harmful intermetallic phases using appropriate tests where required.

Welding and Repair

Specify compatible filler metals, heat input, interpass temperature and post-weld treatment. Reinspect repair welds on corrosive-service parts to the same quality requirements.

Environmental and Property Testing

Select hot tensile, creep, corrosion, intergranular or pitting corrosion, impact, hardness and NDT tests according to project risks.

Material Distinctions: High-chromium white iron primarily resists abrasion and differs from chromium-nickel heat-resistant cast steel. Standard 304/316 stainless steel is not suitable for every chloride solution, acidic slurry or high-temperature atmosphere.
