Mining includes open-pit drilling, blasting and excavation, or underground longwall and continuous mining. CHPP operations include low-speed crushing, screening, desliming, dense-medium separation, fine-coal separation or flotation, and centrifugal dewatering. Power plants add coal conveying, pulverizing, classification, pulverized-fuel pipes, burners, bottom ash and fly ash handling.

Coal is relatively soft, but rock inclusions, pyrite, magnetite dense medium and hard combustion residues can cause severe wear. Wet-coal build-up, dust explosions and fire risks mean that increasing material hardness alone cannot resolve the operating challenges.
