Fluid and Motion Determine Material Selection

NBR, HNBR, FKM, PU and PTFE cannot be substituted by colour or shape alone

Elastomers provide resilience and contact pressure. Polyurethane offers wear and extrusion resistance in selected dynamic hydraulic seals. PTFE and its composites provide low friction and chemical compatibility, while engineering plastics are often used for guide rings, wear rings and supports. Select the material together with the seal type and complete groove design.

01 · HYDRAULIC

Hydraulic Cylinder Seals and Guides

Part
Piston seals, rod seals, wipers, buffer seals, static seals, guide rings and wear rings.
Required Properties
Resistance to hydraulic fluids, pressure cycling, extrusion, friction, wear and contamination, with resilience and dimensional stability.

Seals and guides form a system. Check grooves, clearances and rod surface damage when replacing a seal.

02 · ROTARY SHAFT

Rotary Shaft and Bearing Seals

Part
Pinion shaft seals, bearing seals, elastomeric elements in labyrinth seal assemblies and mechanical seal secondary seals.
Required Properties
Low friction, oil and temperature resistance, wear resistance and stable lip contact, with allowance for shaft eccentricity and dust.

Speed, shaft diameter, runout and inadequate lubrication can rapidly change material performance.

03 · DUST & SLURRY

Dust, Slurry and Static Seals

Part
Gyratory crusher dust seals, O-rings, gaskets, pump packing, mechanical seal secondary parts and protective wipers.
Required Properties
Particle exclusion, fluid compatibility, wear resistance and resilience; slurry service also requires assessment of erosion and solids.

Slurry pump wet-end linings and seals have different functions. A rubber lining compound is not automatically suitable for a shaft seal.

Control Points from Drawing to Delivery

Small seals can have a major effect on equipment downtime.

Material Identification

Record the material family, compound or grade, batch and certificate; colour is not a reliable material identifier.

Dimensions and Appearance

Check cross-section, bore and outside diameter, lips, flash, nicks, surfaces and deformation caused by packaging.

Grooves and Mating Surfaces

Check groove dimensions, extrusion gaps, shaft or cylinder surfaces, chamfers and assembly orientation.

System Validation

Assess compatibility and perform necessary bench or trial-fit testing for the fluid, pressure, temperature and motion.
