Materials and Processes

Common Wear Patterns

  • Contact fatigue pitting of tooth flanks
  • Tooth scuffing: inadequate lubrication under heavy loads causes localized welding and tearing of metal
  • Tooth root bending fatigue cracks
  • Tooth abrasion caused by contaminated lubricant
Replacement Criteria

Assess replacement against the pitting and tooth thickness limits in the gear drawings and maintenance specification. Replace immediately if tooth root cracks occur.

Materials, heat treatment, composite construction and inspection requirements depend on the specific drawing, operating conditions and technical review.

Material Grade / Substrate

Heat Treatment Condition

Follow the applicable standard for the material grade; confirm heat treatment and hardness requirements against the drawing

Dimensions and Inspection

Inspect key dimensions against the drawing for the OEM part number. Check mounting and sealing surfaces individually and perform UT/MT non-destructive testing on castings.

Parts with the same name may not be interchangeable because of differences in machine model, drawing revision, mounting interface or material specification. Use the complete model, serial number, drawing number and drawing before manufacture.
