G20Mn5 Cast Steel

The pitman is a load-bearing steel casting. G20Mn5 may be considered as an engineering candidate, but the actual grade, delivery condition, strength and impact properties must be specified by the drawing for the machine.

Heat Treatment

Define casting heat treatment and any local surface treatment for the material grade, section thickness and drawing requirements. Apply specified non-destructive testing, such as UT/MT where suitable, to critical areas.

Protection Plate Materials

Candidate front protection plate materials include manganese steel (Mn13Cr2) and Hardox 400 wear-resistant plate. Bolted plates can be replaced separately when worn, subject to the machine design.

Comparison of Similar Material Grades

G20Mn5 cannot be interchanged with another national grade merely because the names appear similar. Compare casting standards, composition, delivery condition, strength, impact properties and inspection requirements.

Wear and Replacement Criteria

The following pitman and front protection plate wear patterns and replacement guidance support maintenance planning.

Main failure modes

Inspect pitman bearing bores, toggle seat interfaces, front protection plates and the casting for fatigue cracks. Actual life depends on loading, maintenance and damage condition.

Replacement Criteria

Inspect for bearing bore wear causing a loose fit, severe toggle seat interface wear, through-wear of the front protection plate and pitman fatigue cracks. If damage is limited to the protection plate, replace that plate separately.

Recommended Actions

Monitor bearing temperature and vibration, inspect toggle seat interface wear and check front protection plates regularly for timely replacement.
