Hydrocyclone

A key unit in classification circuits. Apexes and feed heads face high-velocity slurry erosion; select ceramic or rubber linings for particle size and solids concentration.

Hydrocyclones use centrifugal action to classify, separate or thicken solids in slurry. Pressurized slurry enters tangentially and forms a swirling flow. Coarser or denser particles move towards the wall and leave through the underflow, while finer or lighter particles follow the inner vortex through the overflow pipe. There are no moving parts, but internal erosion can be severe. Linings and replaceable inserts are the principal wear parts. Applications include grinding circuit classification, desliming and thickening.

Materials for similarly named parts may differ by OEM, machine model and operating conditions. Confirm the machine model, OEM drawing number and measured dimensions before ordering or manufacture.

Material Information

  • Polyurethane (PU): a candidate hydrocyclone lining material. Temperature resistance, hydrolysis resistance and fluid compatibility depend on the specific formulation and operating conditions.
  • A05 high-chromium cast iron: a candidate metal lining for concentrated slurries containing coarse particles.
  • Alumina ceramics (Al₂O₃ 92%): candidate hydrocyclone linings and inserts for severe abrasion.
  • Silicon carbide ceramics (SiC): a candidate for hot, corrosive service.
  • Wear-resistant rubber: a candidate lining for fine-particle slurries. Select the grade for slurry temperature, chemistry and the original specification.
