Why the Two Standards Systems Matter

Cross-border procurement of wear parts requires an understanding of GOST (ГОСТ) and GB (Chinese National Standards) standards systems. Their structures, test methods and grade definitions differ. Misunderstanding these differences can lead to nonconforming deliveries, project delays and safety risks.

Key Material Standards

Manganese Steel

Manganese steel casting standard specified on the drawing Check the specified grade, composition, heat treatment and acceptance properties against the complete standard and amendments cited on the drawing. Commercial material abbreviations are not formal grade designations.

GB/T 5680-2023 Covers austenitic manganese steel castings. Specify the grade, heat treatment, test specimens and acceptance requirements. Similar manganese content alone does not establish equivalence to a Russian grade.

High-Chromium Cast Iron

GOST 7769-82 Addresses alloy cast iron grades with special properties. Check the composition of the specified grade and define the casting requirements, heat treatment and inspection plan.

GB/T 8263-2025 Covers abrasion-resistant white iron castings and replaces the previous edition. Compare grades, composition, microstructure, properties and test conditions individually.

Casting Tolerances

Casting tolerances must be defined together with the standard edition, dimension definitions, tolerance grades and machining allowances. Older drawings may cite GOST 26645-85, which is no longer effective in Russia; the Russian successor is GOST R 53464-2009. The former Chinese standard GB/T 6414-2017 has been replaced by GB/T 42124.3-2025. The systems cannot be converted using a universal grade difference or fixed dimensional offset.

For OEM Replacement Parts, define mating surfaces, hole positions, datums and individually specified tolerances on the drawing. Continued use of a historical edition must be agreed in the contract.

Differences in Test Methods

  • Hardness: select Brinell hardness (HBW) or Rockwell hardness (HRC) as required by the material and standard, and record the load, test location and surface condition.
  • Impact Testing: when using methods such as GOST 9454 or GB/T 229, specify specimen dimensions, notch geometry, temperature and result units. Values obtained under different conditions are not directly comparable.
  • Chemical Analysis: specify the sampling location, analysis method and permitted deviations. Use consistent inspection conditions with the GB/T 223 series or the method specified in the contract.

Practical Procurement Requirements

When ordering Spare Parts for a cross-border project:

  1. Do Not Assume Grade Equivalence—compare formal grade designations, composition, heat treatment, properties and test methods individually.
  2. Specify the Applicable Standards in the Purchase Order—including the standard number and edition year.
  3. Agree on inspection requirements under both standards—if acceptance under both systems is required, specify both sets of requirements and how conflicts will be resolved. A test report is not a certification certificate.
  4. Review Tolerance Requirements—determine allowances from the drawing, casting process and machining datums; do not add a fixed amount universally.
  5. Confirm the Impact Test Method—state whether the reported result is KCU or KCV.

Conformity Assessment and Market Access

Before placing a product on the Russian market, determine from its intended use, condition of supply and applicable technical regulations whether it requires conformity assessment. TR CU 010/2011 provides an exemption from conformity confirmation for parts used for repair and maintenance. This does not establish an exemption for every product or under other regulations. Where conformity assessment is required, follow the applicable certification or declaration procedure and marking requirements.
